Internationally acclaimed and prolific designer, Richard Frinier, inspires people to create spaces that bring the quality of indoor living outside and the casual spirit of the outdoors inside. Frinier’s nearly 40 years of experience in product design for textiles and furniture has led to the creation of thousands of individual designs across hundreds of collections – some of which have been in continuous production for over of 30 years.
A master of art and crafts, Frinier began his career as a sculptor, artist, interior furniture and lighting designer. In 1981, he turned his focus toward designing performance furnishings and textiles for interiors and exteriors. Since then, Frinier has designed for leading brands around the world. He is widely known for his personal passion to create sophisticated and elegant designs that are authentic, relevant and memorable.
In addition to being named one of the most influential individuals in the home furnishings industry over the past 40 years by Furniture Today, Frinier is the recipient of over 90 design excellence and career achievement awards. His other honors include being an American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame inductee, a Lifetime Achievement Award winner (International Casual Furnishings Association), and a winner of the Stars of Design award (Pacific Design Center)., He has also received multiple awards for his collaborations with Sunbrella® fabrics, including a Good Design™ award from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, IDSA IDEA Industrial Design Excellence award, ADEX Platinum and ADEX Gold Design Excellence awards, Interior Design magazine’s coveted Best-of-Year award, and Architectural Record’s Product of the Year award, each for his Sunbrella® Caravan, Architexture and Network Collections from Sunbrella respectively.
Inspired by the fast-paced world of social media networking, the Network Collection is meant to capture attention, referencing an interpretation of the world-changing phenomenon that is shared digital content. The Architexture Collection explores architecture’s influence on society and the growing global design trend surrounding the surfacing and resurfacing of buildings. Other current collections by Frinier for Sunbrella include Caravan, capturing his impressionable travel experiences and memorable time spent in Morocco, and Seaside, a reflection of his native California coastal enclave of Santa Barbara.
